Die am rechten Maroschufer (rum. Mureş) liegende Burg Lippa (rum. Lipova)war bis zur Flussmündung die wichtigste Befestigungsanlage. Hier kreuzten sich die Verkehrswege nach Siebenbürgen und in die ostungarische Tiefebene. Burg und Stadt bilden getrennte Funktionsbereiche. Nach dem Friedensschluss 1699 setzte mit dem Bau der flussabwärts liegenden Festung Arad ein Bedeutungsverlust der Burg ein.

The castle of Lipova, which lies on the right bank of the Mureș, was the most important fortification structure before the mouth of the river. Here the traffic ways to Transylvania and into the eastern Hungarian basin cross. The castle and the city constitute separated functional areas. After the Treaty of 1699 the castle began to lose significance, with the building of the Fortress of Arad downstream.
