Ein Hauptmerkmal des Landes sind die verschiedenen „Nationen“: Ungarn, Sachsen, Szekler, Moldauer und Walachen. Der Aufzählung liegt nicht das ständische Nationsverständnis, sondern eine auf Herkunft, Sprache und Konfession beruhende Vorstellung  zugrunde. Verortet werden mehrere „Walacheien“, Randgebiete mit hoher rumänischer Bevölkerungskonzentration. Ethnische Diversität überschneidet sich mit konfessioneller Vielfalt.

A major characteristic of the country is the various “nations”: Hungarians, Saxons, Székelys, Moldavians, and Wallachians. This listing is not based on an understanding of a nation of estates, but on an idea focused on origin, language and confession. Several “little Wallachias” are positioned on the map, marginal areas with a high concentration of Romanians.  Ethnic diversity overlaps with confessional variety.
