Donau – die Entstehung einer Raummetapher (I.) / Danube – The Development of a Metaphor for Space (I.)

In the classical world the Danube was already viewed as a mythical river. Early modern maps of the river from its source to its mouth visualized this myth. They convey the notion that the current in its course not only binds rivers, lands and cities together, but also two worlds: Occident and Orient, Europe and Asia. The two worlds met not only through the exchange of goods and ideas, but also through warlike confrontations.
During the Turkish wars, the Danube region became a bloodily disputed border area, dotted with lofty fortification structures. Beginning in 1699/1718 there was a ‘Christian’ and an ‘Islamic’ Danube, a Habsburg river and an Ottoman river.  There developed a durably influential political and cultural fracture line. The decisive factor was, however, not that the current represented the border of two realms, but rather that it always remained a permeable dividing line.
Cartographers and fortification architects opened up the newly conquered areas and drafted maps and plans of them.  The academic sciences followed in their footsteps, describing the area in their works and thereby contributing decisively to its ‘invention.’
Contemporaries realized that not only the fertile ground and the rich mineral resources but also the many peoples who had settled and merged into one another along the Danube constituted a blessing. By the middle of the nineteenth century, the river had become an allegory of the cultural diversity of the state of which it also formed the spatial backbone –the Danube Monarchy. The great river rolled into a metaphor for space that is still understood today.
