Az ún. hibrideket a ceruza-művek egyenesági leszármazottainak tekinthetjük, annak ellenére, hogy Böröcz e munkáinak hangsúlyos részét növényi ágak és gyökerek adják. A növények organikus formáit egészen más szabályok alakítják, mint az emberi világ konstruált tárgyait. Böröcz a hibridekben a természet által teremtett, illetve az ember készítette formákat megkísérli egységbe foglalni, megmutatva a különbségeket, a kettő ellentmondásait, de az egymásban való folytatódás lehetőségét is. A növények karaktere, mozgásuk útja ceruza-kötegekben folytatódik, és ezzel szinte észrevétlenül meg is változik, hogy azután visszatérjen a természetes növényi lét világába (Demeter, Vízkereső, Bot).

A művész leggyakrabban a brooklyni kertjében növő füge- és kozo-bokrok ágait használja hibridjeihez. A növényeket ő maga ültette és gondozza. 

Böröcz’s so-called hybrids can be regarded as direct descendants of his pencil work, despite the raw material for the bulk of them being branches and roots of plants. The organic forms of plants obey entirely different rules than the objects constructed in the man-made world. Yet, in his Hybrids Böröcz attempts to create a unified system using natural and man-made forms, showing both their differences and opposing qualities, along with the potential for grafting them to each other. The forms of these plants, whose movements continue in carved pencil bundles, unnoticeably undergoing this change, later return to their natural plant existence (Demeter, Douser, Switch).

Böröcz made most of his hybrids from the branches of the fig and kozo trees growing in his garden in Brooklyn.
